How To Get Into Med- School In South Africa?? | PART 1 | Tips From A 4th Year Med Student

hello guys welcome back to my YouTube channel and if this is your first time welcome to my youtube channel my name is Julia Stockman and I'm a third-year medical student Senna's as you've seen with the title of this video I'll be talking about how to get into medical school like you guys have been asking for that video and I'm finally making it I'm so excited to guys like I feel like a relief it's just like something's taken off my shoulders like now that I'm doing this video finally so guys I've been doing a lot of research on like cause I want to give you guys like a very detailed and like researched information about all of this and another thing that I came across was that there's like so much and there's so many universities having different requirements at first I thought of making like a video where I talked about every specific University but then it looked like it's gonna be like a very long video and then now I decided that I'm gonna make three videos part 1 part 2 part 3 and then I'll just explain like now now what that all that means but yeah in this video I'll be in the part 1 of the series and I'm deciding to make it like a very short video but I'll link everything that you guys need because I did make I did do the research and I dedicate everything that you guys are gonna need so I'm just gonna link everything down in my description box yeah I hope you guys enjoy this video so yeah guys I'm gonna make three parts to this video one video for students who are brand new from high school or currently doing the metric and other videos another video for students who have actually finished a metric but they don't qualify so now they're doing I don't know maybe they're working but they're not in faceting yet and then a third video for students that are already in varsity studying something because I feel like those like it's different like not everyone has the same requirements and the same the same opportunities and the same options so that's why I decided to make this video into three pots so yeah let's get into the first part of this video so guys before we start with this video if you haven't subscribed to my channel please hit the right button like right now please like and please subscribe to my channel and here's please if whatever I'm gonna say now is not enough or you still have more questions please leave your questions right in the description box and if you are already in varsity you already doing medicine and there's something that I must please help us out and leave your comment and add to whatever I'm gonna say so yeah guys how to get into med school in South Africa part one talking to the matriculants so yeah first things first guys something that we were never told like your grade 11 is so important like it's the report you can apply with like when you're in mitrik they don't want your June report they don't want your they don't wait for your final metric results so what they want is your great eleven marks so when you calculate your abs when you looking for like a few qualify for all the requirements you look at your great eleven report so yeah great eleven is very important and if you're in grade 11 right now then this video is just in time for you so yeah next thing guys you need to apply on time like what's mid school it's not the same as the other faculties like in the Health Sciences especially for medicine and dentistry I think the applications actually close very and he like what the other ones they usually close in September but then with medicine and dentistry and some other ones they close like in June so if you're gonna wait and be like all applies in the second series that you already be late so try to look at those prospects that I'm gonna be linking in this video and see when you're supposed to be handing in your applications because before it's too late and you're recreating it okay and then number three is actually very important like I noticed when I was looking at all that like the requirements and the different universities that most of them what they haven't is that they all want you to have written an NPT test and NBT test is a national benchmark test so as a test that all students have to take before they can get into versa capacity so it's a test that measures your the level of your academic literacy and your mathematics skills so yeah everyone has to do the test as far as I know like in all the universities as a requirement like everyone has had to do that test so I'll link a link to the website where you can actually apply to write the national benchmark test it's important guys don't put it and be like I'll do it later you need to apply and get a date so you can know where you're gonna write it and when you're gonna write it and yeah again you need to calculate your app score correctly guys like you need to know that different universities don't use the same way to calculate the F score so look at the prospectors see how they calculate the F score because different universities don't use the same methods and some universities intrude like some subjects like ello while some universities don't so don't just calculate your F score once and the inter-site that this is it and then use it to try and apply to all these universities so look at the prospectus read the prospectus and see what they actually want you to get and what the EPS is and then go to open day guys it's like if you can it would be really really beneficial to you to go to an open day like it doesn't have to be all the universities you're trying to apply to you can just be one that's close to you or one that you can actually get to and it's usually an April or May and it's a Saturday so it's not like during the week where you in school anything is like on a Saturday so if you close your university some way then it would be really beneficial for you to just go to the open gate because that's where they're gonna answer like most of you of your questions like literally all of your questions that you have and they're gonna give you the best advice that's like before applications can close because applications usually close like on June so yeah I try to go to the open day if you can but also if you can't then it's still okay like this a video like this a really cool video that they took here in U P last year and the open day of 2018 talking about medicine and requirements and all of that it's actually the selection team that actually made that video I think it's a very useful video so I'll link it in my description box as well and then if you can't make it to the open day watch that video and if you can't make it to open day still watch that video like it's it's so helpful guys I even wish I had a video like that when I was applying for medicine so yeah the sixth point is a lot of these universities are actually having most of them they have like an average of around a level six like for the minimum requirement level six for your physics your English and your mathematics right and some universities also include life sciences while some give you an option of having either life sciences or physical sciences so you must actually check like look at the prospectus see if it really requires life science or is it just like you can have physics instead of life sciences right so yeah they usually have a minimum of a six level six but gasps that doesn't mean that you have to get like spot-on like level six that's gonna decrease your chances of getting in because a lot of people applying for medicine like that's just a said truth a lot of people are applying for medicine a lot of people are not getting into medicine so you can imagine how high the competition is like it's so bad like you need to do like extremely well to just make sure that you're secure in your sport your spot up there so yeah the level six it's just like a minimum that okay fine if you can't really get those distinctions at least get a level six but yeah if you can like shoot for this shoot for the stars like and I believe that everyone can actually get those level six so yeah level six is the minimum and also if you probably just got level six in your grade level then that means you have to work very hard in your grade 12 so you can like get very good marks which are going to increase your chance right and then um what Elmo's point number seven is so about community service so community service is very important guys like you need to have worked in a hospital prior to applying for medicine like they want a number of hours or days that you worked you've actually experienced the hospital setting and you've worked in a hospital and I think it's just like they just want to see if you can actually tolerate that environment or you really really want to do medicine you like experience this thing and then you're still applying which means you actually want to do it so yeah guys it's very important go do your community service find out look at the prospectus find out how many hours you need to do how many weeks or whatsoever just know like know guys and also I know it can be very difficult to actually go to a hospital and just like asked to community service there sometimes they liked how you you had to go back to the University and get a late sign out of that so what I did in my year I was advice to actually go to my principal at school to actually write me and later explaining and describing everything that I need and why I need to actually go to the community service day and then I had to take her to the hospital manager and then that way you can actually do it so you can't just go to the nurses or do you like anyone you find in the hospital and ask to do your community service oh I need to like follow the going to your principal get the letter take it to the hospital manager and then that way you can do it and also guys like you have the weekends so I know you're busy during the week but you have the weekend so you can do it like over weekends or you can do it during your match holidays so you actually do have time if you haven't done it yet and about leadership skills and sports achievements those are not a necessity like they not a requirement but then if you have it it can actually add some points to your application I'm just not sure how many points but it does help a little bit if you do have those and also it helps later when you get into varsity and then you can get scholarships and you can get Bathory's or you can actually get money back because of your sports achievements so guys it would be really nice if you had that but if you don't it's also like not the end of the world it's fine okay you just need to meet the requirements of your marks and all the other things are spoken about and also guys my advice to you is that you need to apply as many universities as possible because I don't know for me that just makes sense like you're gonna increase your chance of getting into medicine right so I applied to make as many universities as possible because they also don't have the same requirements that means where you're lacking and one University or way they feel like it's not enough as much as you meeting the minimum requirement the other University will probably not be so hard on you like it just increases your chance so I would really advise you to apply this many universities as product as possible English guys yeah it's as many universities as possible and also like I know some universities you actually apply you you don't pay the application fee if you apply online like I'm just not sure which ones but I know there's something like that and other universities actually pay half of that I think that's you Kaiser and when you pay half of the application fee of you apply online so if money as the problem try to look at those universities and see which ones you can apply to and yes own I try to apply to as many universities as possible at Lee's form yeah and also guys you need to work very hard like this is supposed to be my last point and there's something that I missed okay I don't know I think there's something I missed bitch aah Oh at this point you need to work very hard in your grade 12 yeah so it doesn't mean that because your grade 11 was so amazing I'm actually just gonna get and know they're gonna professionally accept you but then they still waiting for your final grade 12 months so I need to do like very well in your grade 12 so that you can stay in the list right so when they provisionally accept you they literally saying we want to see what happens next year so if beginning of the year your marks come out and you've actually dropped by two points from the F score they actually cut you out I know that's what happens with you P so you can even drop like by two points from your abs Oh more than that so yeah try to like work harder than you worked in grade 11 right I know it's possible like now you motivated to be goin to varsity and all of that and you have more energy and more Drive and I try to work harder and harder so that you actually increase your chance of getting in you go higher up in the list instead of going down because that's also possible like if you're max go down you will go down in the list like it will just yeah so try by all means to increase your mark so that you can increase your chance so yeah guys I don't know what I missed I'm not sure if I actually mentioned everything I want to mention but these are like the very important basics of trying to apply for medicine if there's anything else that I did not touch on can you please please please speak to me or either an Instagram or down in my comments and ask me anything else that I did not touch on and you still feel like you need clarity on and tell me maybe you need a follow-up video for this maybe you have more questions where maybe you can do like a Q and a question and I can answer more questions in this topic of getting into med school from high school in South Africa and yeah guys as I said to everyone who's already in varsity and if you like also that something that you found important during your process of applying that I didn't mention please help us out and tell us in the description and comments so that we can actually help each other out so yeah guys I hope you found this video very useful and please don't forget to Like and subscribe to my channel and also tell me what more you need to know or have you applied or are you planning to apply or anything so yeah guys thank you for watching

HEY Julia! Which Bsc at UP should apply for if they want to be considered for mbchb later on throughout the year? Can it be any Bsc or is there a specific one one needs to apply for in order to be considered after a semester doing it(Bsc) for mbchb

WITS, UP, UCT, US, UFS consider NBT

SMU, UKZN not sure of WSU they dont consider NBT.

UP – if you have a degree u dont have to write NBT.

    SMU open day – 16 and 17 May 2019.

This days app score does not count anymore its about distinctions ranking. So to secure space get high marks not level 5s shown on prospectus.

@UP u can get in via Biological science where you can join the Medicine Second semester or the following bt competition is tough.

@WITS if you have a degree apply for GEMP wer u join medicine at 3rd yr bt the exam (Anatomy, physiology, molecular biology) is not easy. Bt possible.

@Stellenbosch And SMU they have extended 7 years Medicine programme for those who ddnt qualify for 6 year program bt they select few students

@UCT if you have a degree they can look at your marks and youll be automatically taken to second year pending the number of current 1st year or space
