The absurdity of mandatory Indigenous studies courses at Canadian universities!

Carolyn Bennett Canada's Minister of indigenous and northern Affairs voiced her support for mandatory Indigenous Studies classes for every university student in Canada her statement came about via the Native Students Association of the University of Toronto petitioning to have this implemented into the school's curriculum and I for one am very excited why well Canadian universities agreed to make indigenous courses mandatory then just think of what other possibilities this could lead to for Canadian university education mandatory courses in other aspects of traditional Canadian culture that are currently considered unrepresented such as hockey maple syrup apologizing and the beaver though I think that last one would get a lot of attention and let's not forget courses to reflect modern-day Canada like politics which is just a hairdressing course with the chapter on how to take the perfect selfie social studies which involves letting anyone and everyone into this country at anytime and of course Canadian engineering of course about building pipelines you sign up for it then you get a note in French telling you it's cancelled before you start the semester now what I just said seems ridiculous and it was meant to be problem is the movement to implement mandatory indigenous studies courses into the Canadian University curriculum is not U of T's native students Association has started a petition to gain support for their cause and at the time of recording this piece they have one thousand one hundred and forty four signatures or approximately point zero zero zero one percent of the Canadian population now even the Green Party got more support than that during the election but despite the irrelevance of the Green Party Elizabeth May still managed to get a seat in the House of Commons in this case we've already seen the University of Winnipeg and Lakehead University approve mandatory Indigenous Studies courses for undergrads so I just like to mention I'm already with my Canadian cuisine 101 class day one the perfect boot in Canada has some world-class post-secondary institutions and one of the few benefits of the fallen Canadian dollar is that there is an increased amount of American students putting their American dollars into Canadian post-secondary education but the fact that they're studying in Canada doesn't mean they need to study about Canada and that rule applies to our homegrown students as well so how about we stick with topics relevant to a university degree and leave the indigenous studies as electives you know courses that you sign up for and then don't go to like French for the rebel I'm Jason Agnew

Did you practice this while holding your king james comic book with twelve hero's that failed to save your man-god? henry was born a man and died a man. He left and didnt come back. Even if he did return it will happen again. He will try to help and then he will be murdered again and again and again. Because of attitudes like this decendant of a pilgrim. So every thanks giving i will say your welcome for my ancestors saving yours. To be honest we should have destroyed every boat that approached our shores.like the whites when greed kicks in. Be proud of stolen land as a thief would be. Be proud of murder in the name of your murdered god. Your welcome for the promised land. Shame to you for corrupting it with greed sloth pride envy glutteny lust murder rape abuse torture attempted genocide. In the name of your lord you are blessed and we are cursed. In the name of your lord awwww maaaaan. Born a man died a man.

The slippery slope fallacy at its best in this video. Indigenous courses are a part of the history curriculum, which is perfectly logical given the history of Canada, and that should be obvious. It sounds like all you want to do is stir the pot and not look at things rationally.

His understanding of why Native Studies should be mandatory is proof enough of the arrogance and ignorance in our systems about First Nations People. Comparing the courses to hockey and maple syrup is incredibly ignorant. I would highly suggest that he educate himself and take a few Native Studies courses to have a base knowledge of the History because he really does not get it. There needs to be more education on why our systems are so outdated and systematically racist. The truth about our own country is extremely sad and embarrassing which is probably why most people don't want to take a closer look at it. Racism is a true form of human stupidity and the only way to stop being judgemental and arrogant is to be educated and wise. Clearly this man is not. I feel really sorry for his lack of knowledge on the subject.

I think we all should not forget the importance of history and the lessons we can can learn from that of the original citizens or at least first inhabitants of this land and besides the facts that you school in Canada (or any other nation) is substantial enough reason to study their history, however whether it should be made mandatory is up for debates…It still makes much more sense to me though.

First they should teach the Natives that bannock came from the Scottish fur traders in the 1750s (come on did they really have flour, salt , baking powder ? ) , no horses either til the fellas from Spain visited (1400-1500 ). Funny how two things they hold so dear to their heart came from white folk. Considering that Europeans where here 12000 years ago when most of Canada was under a 1km thick glacier and mastadons were still around … I'd say natives have some of the same ancestors as us white dudes. Now put that in your pipe and smoke it !

So it's okay for students to learn about the founding of Canada, Confederation, the war of 1812 etc. But ignore Indigenous Canadian history. This for University students not elementary students. This is a course for students who want to learn past high school. What I want to know is why are Conservatives so ignorant to Native Issues? You can't even have an open mind to listen and learn about Native Canadians and their way of life. It's really sad. Native Canadians are at the root of Canadian history. And patriotic minded people should have respect for those whose ancestors first walked and lived on this land.

Most required courses in my American college were pure bupkes! And there were more than 11 of them! So I can sympathize with Canadian students. It's time colleges treat students like adults!

There's a group at my university trying to do this…it's fucked. Look, I actually took a course on history of indigenous peoples during my degree, but I did so completely voluntarily…university students are adults and should be respected as such, not forced to study irrelevant courses like schoolchildren.

They're going to teach how Indians (feather, not dot) get all sorts of free stuff, pay little or no taxes, and yet can't get off their ass and put the bottle/bong down to keep from drowning in their own vomit right?  Maybe if they dropped the victim narrative, joined the rest of the population with equal obligations, and stopped being welfare queens they wouldn't be in such dire straights.  After all, we all know how well the welfare coddling helped the black populace in the US for the last 60 years.

Here it comes…a push for another layer of Cultural Marxism in our leftist school system designed to make all who take these courses resent (and some hate) our society. Specifically white people and the Western society.

    Jason, that was a hoot!

And, since what's good for the goose must be good for the gander, let's force indigenous students to take mandatory courses in, say, CAPITALISM. That would do them a hell of a lot more good than "indigenous studies" would do us.

While we're at it lets make that course in capitalism mandatory for all non-aboriginals as well. They won't get it any other way. That might help offset the brain damage being done by those studies in the-rosy-side-of-Marxism that most of them are getting now.

oh good maybe the natives will learn about their culture, stewardship of the land and the importance of ecology and hopefully stop using their reserves as a dumping ground. if you want non-native to start respecting and taking them seriously, maybe we should stop the funding so they become productive integrated citizens of Canada and respect others and the land.

They can teach students how government creates dependency among these people – insuring that they remain in poverty forever. Then they can show how the Liberals are erasing transparency in this dependency process so their leaders can screw them over & not have to worry about being caught.

This is why university is a complete waste of time. This is why I refused to allow my kids to go to university. My son is a ticked welder and my daughter is a professional cook who both took their pre-apprentice training at community college and learned the rest while on the job training. No diversity training or no indian studies or women's studies or whatever. The only thing now is the economy that the Alberta NDP and federal liberals have destroyed. Now my kids future, and everybody else's, is on hold while the university elites are pushing gender studies as a future. You cant make money off of university and it corrupts your mind.
